You Have the Power to Increase the Sum Total of the World’s Happiness. Right Now.

thank you smiley guy“You have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world’s happiness now. How? By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or discouraged. Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today, but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime.”  Dale Carnegie

It’s important to be aware of what we say to others, as our words have a profound impact – one that can be very positive or a negative impact.  Oftentimes, we are not aware of how our words hurt.

In the beginning of my career, I worked with a woman who told me that I was “permanent potential.”  I interpreted this statement to mean that I had a lot of potential, but I would never actually amount to anything. It hurt.  Looking back, I realize there are many reasons she would have uttered that phrase.  She may have said it in frustration, or to inspire me to get better, or she may have just said it for no particular reason at all.  Chances are she doesn’t remember saying it.  However, I remembered.

Like mom used to say, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”  Consciously consider ALL of the words that come out of your mouth today.  If you need to make a negative remark, criticize the action – not the person.  People may do stupid things, but they are not stupid.

Your words of affirmation not only bring somebody up when they’re feeling down, your words will be cherished for a lifetime.

Have fun,

Lisa
