Top Three Employee Engagement and Gratitude Articles for the week of December 19, 2014

Because there are so many great articles on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation in the workplace, I want to share the best of these resources with you. Here are my favorites from this week. I have included some of my thoughts on these gratitude strategies (“Grategies”) and would like to hear your comments too.

Why it matters if the boss is engaged with the workforce  by Sue Alderson

(BQ – Business Quarter) “We asked employed people about the information their employers knew about them, in relation to their lives outside of work. Almost half of bosses do not know the names of their employees’ children.  This statistic was just one from among those which emerged in the survey and is just one example of a detachment between bosses and those they employ.”

My Thoughts: In the scheme of things, it takes so little effort to connect with employees. Not knowing your employee’s spouse’s name?  Really?!!!

Better employee engagement, better bottom line by Jennifer Glose

(LVB.com) “Highly engaged employees are committed to their organization and invested in its success. They are proactive in sharing their ideas, in promoting their company and organization inside and out, and they exert discretionary effort – above and beyond what is required just to earn their salary and stay employed.”

My Thoughts: The article not only hits on 10 best practices for engagement, it gives a few of the important stats on the effect to the bottom line.  It’s amazing how many companies still are not getting the fact that this works.

5 HR Department Roles for Successful Employee Engagement  by Paul Keijzer

(B2C – Business 2 Community) “HR should ensure that data and measurement plays its supportive role but does not overshadow what it’s all about. Engaging employees in a way that they have a sense of belonging, feel that they can make a contribution, are challenged, can grow and feel valued.”

My thoughts: HR plays a huge role in employee engagement. They have the most influence over company leadership and they have (or should have) the tools and knowledge to bring these concepts to the workplace.
