Your Reaction to Others is Your Choice

Every day you choose how you treat yourself and how you treat those around you. Remember, no matter how someone else treats you, you can decide how to react.
While conducting an HR training program, I had the rudest, most disrespectful person I have ever experienced in one of my sessions. She told the class she was there because her employees said she was a “walking, talking, legal nightmare, and a lawsuit waiting to happen.” As you can imagine, the day didn’t get much better. (When one of the topics discussed did not apply to her, she put her feet up on the table and checked email. Yes, it was bad.)

Did it bother me? Yes. Did I let her destroy my day? No. My choice was to provide value to the people who wanted to learn and improve themselves. When focusing on the majority of the attendees who were positive and appreciative, instead of concentrating on the one “Negative Nelly” in the program, I saved myself and the participants a lot of aggravation.

There’s a saying, “What others think about you is none of your business.” If there’s someone who is getting under your skin, put on the “Frozen” soundtrack and “let it go!”

PS – You don’t have to like everyone you meet, but you do have to be polite and be respectful. It’s the right thing to do.
