“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” ― Oprah Winfrey
My sister-in-law and I had a conversation about making the bed. She is a person who does this task every morning. Her father insisted upon it when she was a child and the habit never left her. I, on the other hand, never saw the need to tidy up my bed. I’ve always just jumped right into the day ahead without taking the minute or that it takes to straighten up my room before going downstairs.
Diana said one thing to me that changed my attitude – and my habit. She said that her father taught her the importance of starting the day by making the bed was because it gave you an accomplishment first thing in the morning. You thereby launch you day on a strong note. Wow! What a concept.
Since I’ve been doing this, I feel better in the morning – it’s a small victory, but an accomplishment all the same. Sometimes it’s the littlest things that can have the biggest impact.
One of my goals for 2017 is to continue to make the bed every morning (except in hotel rooms, there is nothing like coming back to my room after a full day of training and having a clean room and made bed. Ah, the little things!)
What do you do to start your day with a small victory? If you don’t have something now – what WILL you do to initiate your day on a high note?
PS – It’s actually nice going to bed at night with a clean bed. Of course, it would be ever better if I left myself a mint on the pillow!
