Slowly Changing the World

Lisa Ryan Chief Appreciation Strategist at Grategy nature peek (1)“How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment; we can start now, start slowly changing the world! How lovely that everyone, great and small, can make their contribution toward introducing justice straightaway…And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness!” Anne Frank

“Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

Is this true?

Words certainly hurt. Fortunately, words can also heal, if we choose to use them.  Oftentimes it’s not what we said that we regret, it’s what we didn’t say.  We assume that the people in our lives know how much we love and appreciate them. However, what I have found in my life is that every single person in my life, without exception, has failed…mindreading 101.  It reminds me of the couple who was celebrating their 25-year wedding anniversary.  The wife was sobbing uncontrollably.  The husband asked her, “Honey, what’s wrong.” She replied, “You never tell me you love me.”  He said, “Listen, I told you 25 years ago that I loved you and if that ever changes, I’ll let you know.”

Sharing our feelings with those people who mean the most to us is like giving them a verbal hug. When we wrap them in the warmth of our words, we create a beautiful connection and a memory that lasts.  You never know when the last thing you say to someone is going to be the last thing you ever get to say to them. As in the old insurance commercial – “Life comes at you fast.”

Just for today – make a call and tell a friend or family member how much you love them and why you are grateful that they are in your life.  Tuck a little note in your spouse’s or child’s lunch bag that simply says, “You’re AWESOME!”  Pick out a card that makes you smile and send it through the mail to someone special. You make a difference!

Have fun,

Lisa
