Top Three Employee Engagement and Gratitude Articles for the week of January 2, 2015

Happy New Year! May 2015 be your BEST year yet!

Because there are so many great articles on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation in the workplace, I want to share the best of these resources with you. Here are my favorites from this week. I have included some of my thoughts on these gratitude strategies (“Grategies”) and would like to hear your comments too.

Engaged Workers Would Keep Jobs Upon Winning Lottery by Jim Harter and Sangeeta Agrawal

( “For U.S. workers whom Gallup classifies as “engaged” in their jobs, these dreams do not include quitting them. Nearly two-thirds say they would continue to work in their current job if they won a $10 million lottery prize.”

My Thoughts:  Even though your chance of being struck by lightning three times is greater than your chance of winning the lottery, it’s interesting to note that even with a humongous prize, engaged workers are still going to keep working at their present job.


Five Ways to Show Gratitude & Appreciation in the Workplace by Samantha Turner

(G5 Learning) “A recent survey of 2,000 Americans, conducted by the John Templeton Foundation, found that people are less likely to express or foster gratitude in the workplace than anywhere else – despite the fact that they themselves wanted to be recognized and thanked more at work.”

My Thoughts: Creating a culture of appreciation starts with YOU! Catch people that you work with doing things right and thank them for their help. Pay your gratitude forward and notice the changes.


Top 10 Reasons Why Job Satisfaction Surveys are a Waste of Time by Alexander Kjerulf

(The Chief Happiness Officer Blog) “Of course a survey should be used to pinpoint problems so they can be fixed, but if that’s all it’s used for the company misses a huge opportunity to identify best practices and spread them by learning from the best performing areas and teams.”

My thoughts:  Yes, in order to know what’s going on in your workplace, it’s important to ask.  However, if asking is the only thing that happens – with no action being taking – this author is correct, surveys are worthless.
