Here are my favorite articles for the week on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation. Feel free to share your comments.
How Smart Companies Get Employees to Brag About the Business by Sam Bahreini
(FoxNews.com) “According to acclaimed author and public speaker Shep Hyken, great companies will train their employees both technically and on how to deliver the best service possible. However, treating your employees with the dignity and respect that every human being craves is at the core of this process. In doing so, you will create a positive domino effect that trickles down to the customers your employees serve.”
My Thoughts: This reminds me of an HR Cartoon, CEO: “Why should we invest in our employees, they’re just going to leave us anyway.” HR Director: “What if we don’t invest in them, and they stay?”
The 4 essential practices to engage employees by Jeff Hollender
(GreenBiz.com) “Actively disengaged employees are more or less out to damage their company. They monopolize managers’ time; have more on-the-job accidents; account for more quality defects; contribute to “shrinkage,” as theft is called; are sicker; miss more days; and quit at a higher rate than engaged employees do. Whatever the engaged do — such as solving problems, innovating and creating new customers — the actively disengaged try to undo.”
My Thoughts: There are lots of costs to employee disengagement. If you’re looking for ways to reduce your losses, a sincere focus on engagement will help turn things around.
Employee Recognition Report by Globoforce
(Globoforce) “HR professionals are beginning to see tangible long-term value in building a best-in-class work culture, predicated on strong relationships, an interest in employee happiness, and a strong emphasis on employee development. As they seek to create these best in-class cultures, a majority of respondents say they are seeing strong results from their recognition and reward programs. And again, the strongest results come from those programs tied to company values.”
My thoughts: If you want to see the research that goes into the positive effects of employee engagement, Globoforce has done the work for you.
