Here are my favorite articles for the week on employee engagement and creating a culture of appreciation. Feel free to share your comments.
The importance of a happy staff by Richard Maloney
(WealthProfessional.com) “Poor leadership contributes heavily to employee disengagement, and it’s the number one reason why employees leave a business and go elsewhere. It’s up to our leaders to turn their attention to their people, getting them actively engaged regularly through new, innovative and inclusive methods, thus creating shared vision and buy in.”
My Thoughts: Employees don’t leave their job, they leave their boss. Any engagement strategy starts at the top – and a sincere commitment and buy-in from leadership matters.
7 Questions That Could Help You Keep Your Employees by Nicole Fallon Taylor
(BusinessNewsDaily.com) “While there are many other things employers can and should do to build workforce loyalty — such as offering flexible work options and other great benefits — just initiating conversations about what’s important to an employee’s personal and professional life is an excellent start.”
My Thoughts: This article is a must-read to learn the seven questions that managers should be asking their employees. Wouldn’t it be nice to know things like, “What motivates you to come to work every day?”
Why compassion in business makes sense by Emma Seppapa
(Greater Good Science Center) “A new field of research is suggesting that when organizations promote an ethic of compassion rather than a culture of stress, they may not only see a happier workplace but also an improved bottom line.”
My thoughts: There is a level of vulnerability that goes along with showing compassion in the workplace. When managers are willing to show they care, employees’ commitment to the company grows exponentially.
