“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” Dr. Seuss
If you’ve read The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, you know that we get our ‘love tanks’ filled in five different ways: words of affirmation; physical touch; acts of service; quality time; and gifts. It probably doesn’t come as a surprise to people who know me, but my primary love language is ‘words of affirmation.’
Why do I share this? Because I have had people in my life that I never felt I could be “me” around. Nothing that I said or did was ever good enough and these people seemed to enjoy taking the act of ignoring me to an art form. After leaving their home, I always felt worse about myself than I did before I went over there in the first place.
Thank you Dr. Seuss for reminding me to be who I am and to share how I feel. I have learned to not have false expectations of people unwilling or unable to give me what I need. The people in my life that affirm me are the people that I know I can count on to be there for me.
Is there someone in your life whom you are making too much of an emotional investment in their response to you? Just know that they are not worthy of your light. Be grateful for the people who support you as you deserve to be supported. They are the ones that truly matter.
Have fun,
Lisa
Yes, there are people who you cannot avoid forever, but you do have the choice to minimize your contact with them.
